Operation Transformation

'10 at 10'

At exactly 10 o' clock this morning, on the 10th day of February all of the children and staff took part in the nationwide initiative '10 at 10'. This initiative, which is being backed by Operation Transformation took place in the majority, if not all, primary schools across the country!

As a school community we felt that it was very inportant to take part, as getting up and active has proven to have hugely beneficial health outcomes for children and adults alike. It also tied in nicely with our current Health Promoting Schools programme.

To complete the challenge we combined running and circuits. We began by running around the school perimeter for 2mins and 30sec. We then spent 2mins and 30 sec doing 30sec segments of the following activities - Lunges, Jumping jacks, High Knees, Squats and Strides. We then repeated the process again to ensure that we had 10 minutes of sustained activity.

A huge well done to all children and staff for taking part.

Proclamation Day.

On the 15th of March, the Staff, Parents, Grandparents, members of the BOM and the pupils celebrated Proclamation Day in line with National events.

It was a means of commemorating the signing of the 1916 proclamation.

Our National Flag was raised by one of our own, Mrs. Anna Conlon.

Anna is a cousin of Séan Mac Diarmada, one of the 7 signatories of the proclamation.

The children played music, sang and also read both the 1916 proclamation and their own revised proclamation - a copy of which is on the downloads page.

The children also performed a dramatic piece retelling the story leading up to and including the events of 1916.

It was a very memorable and enjoyable day.

Féasta Pancóga.

On pancake Tuesday the staff once again took to making pancakes.

Every child got to take part in weighing, measuring and mixing their own batch of pancakes.

Fr Vincent even came to lend a hand.

They were delicious.

Credit Union Schools Quiz.

Congratualtions to 4 of our 6th class pupils who came third in the local heat of the Credit Unions Schools Quiz.

The heats were hotly contested by all local schools.

The Credit Union Schools Quiz consists of two knock out stages at local and regional level and culminate in a National Final in Dublin’s RDS where 100 qualifying teams compete for the title of Schools Quiz champions.

The Quiz is divided into two sections: Competition A for children up to 11 years and Competition B for children under 13.

Local quiz winners go through to the Regional Finals and regional winners and runners-up (100 teams of 4 children) compete for the National titles.

The Schools Quiz is run throughout communities all over Ireland.

The questions are compiled by primary school teachers and cover topics such as geography, history, music, literature and sport.

Congratulations again to the 4 6th class pupils and well done to our other teams who also took part.

Presentation of

The Irish Flag & The Irish Proclamation .

On Thursday the 26th of November, our school community was presented with the Irish Flag and an official copy of the Irish Proclamation.

This is happening in every Primary school in the country in the run up to the centenary of the 1916 Rising.

We were presented with these items by 4 members of the 5th Infantry Battalion from Athlone.

It was a very special and memorable occasion. They spoke to us about the imporatnce of the Tricolour and also read the proclamation.

They were joined in the reading of the proclamation by one of our 6th class pupils.

The tricolour was presented to our 2 youngest pupils and the copy of the Proclamation was presented to a pupil from 4th class.

TEAM HOPE

Christmas Shoe Box appeal.

Once again, the generosity of the School community shone through when we launched the TeamHope Christmas shoebox appeal.

The aim of the appeal was to fill shoeboxes with ages appropriate gifts for children in less well off countrie around the world. These were then shipped to the children by the TEAMHOPE organisation.

In total the school donated 23 shoeboxes to the appeal, ensuring that 23 children would definitely have a christmas preset this year.

Well done to all involved.
